Counseling Services at Horizon High School
As a team we have made it a priority to weave therapeutic interventions throughout the school day at Horizon. At least twice a week the students participate in group therapy that is facilitated by a licensed professional and supported by other staff members. During this time the students are allowed to openly share their thoughts and feelings, updates on their sobriety, and any challenges they may be experiencing while supporting one another. Understanding one another and creating a space of compassion is our main priority. Materials utilized in group therapy sessions are resourced from various evidenced based programs, including the Matrix Program which was developed by Hazelden Betty Ford - a leader in addiction recovery services. During group therapy sessions we dive into topics such as:
Coping with cravings
Understanding the process of relapse
Emotional identification and awareness
Understanding triggers
Developing effective communication skills
Coping with stress
Understanding depression, anxiety, and other co-occurring disorders
Coping with Post Acute Withdrawal Symptoms
Developing healthy relationships and setting necessary boundaries
Artistic and creative therapies
And much much more.
Students are able to meet with our full time licensed professional for individualized support, but are highly encouraged to seek and maintain regular therapy sessions with a professional outside of Horizon High School.
Parents Support Group
Parents play an important role in their teen's lives and we want to give students/families every opportunity to be successful in their recovery. Over the years, one way Horizon supports parents is by hosting a Parent Support Group, depending upon parents' schedules and availability. Some years we can do this, other years not so much. Contact the Director to learn if you would be interested in participating.
What a Parent Support Group can do:
Provide parents a safe place to talk about addiction, mental health, recovery, and how they can take care of their own mental health & well-being while simultaneously supporting their teen.
Help parents get to know each other to form a better close knit recovery community that involves communication and support.
Help empower parents to take active roles in supporting their teen in recovery, both while they are at Horizon and in their future.
